Do you wonder, "what is the best way to lose weight?" To be sure, there are numerous ways to lose weight. Most of them actually do work. The key, in my personal experience, is to find the method that allows a person to lose weight and keep it off for the rest of their life.
Sure, there are short term weight loss needs like fitting into a wedding dress or tux or getting ready for a beach vacation. However, that makes me wonder why, if the person knew he/she was over weight, would they would want to go back to being over weight. That will absolutely be the result of a short-term approach. In fact, it is not uncommon for a person to re-gain MORE weight than they took off.
What I am suggesting, and what I have used for several decades, is a combination of strength training combined with a balanced nutrition program. The key to making this a program that lasts a lifetime is having it be adaptable as a person ages and/or has changes to their bodies due to injuries or activity levels. Lets take a look at the basics of such a program.
Bar none, the best way to lose weight and keep it off is to make strength training part of your life. There are so many ways to incorporate this into your day. You don't need to join a gym, although it helps to have a really good facility in which to train. Myself, I have rarely worked out in an organized gym except when I was in school training with my teammates.
There are some very reasonably-priced ways to get into strength training/weight lifting. The easiest way is to simply begin performing exercises that use your own body weight for resistance. Exercises like push ups, lunges, squats, bench/chair dips, walking up stairs, sit-ups and crunches, chin-ups and pull-ups all can be done with no or very little equipment and, therefor, very little added cost. All you need is the space in your home and you can do these very effective exercises and get started burning fat to lose weight TODAY!
After you have gotten into the habit, I do recommend picking up some dumb bells, barbells and a weight bench. This will expand the exercises available to you and give you more variety (this is very important both physically and from a mental perspective). You don't have to buy new equipment, either. Find a Play It Again Sports store; they are all over the country; and see what they have. I've done that a couple of times and found good equipment at a good price.
As you gain more experience, you will likely learn about other exercises that you want to do. Try negative exercises. You can decide if you want to buy more equipment, join a gym or keep working out at home. It's all your choice. Find out what works for you! There are all kinds of diets on the market that promise to help you lose weight. Most of them will definitely help you do that. The issue is that, standing alone, a diet will only take you so far. Most people that diet end up putting the weight back on because they aren't taking the steps to profoundly change their lifestyle. If you want to lose weight and keep it off so its never to be seen again, don't go on a diet. Get on a better nutrition program.
Wondering what the difference is? It's simple. The core of most diets is to reduce your caloric intake. Don't get me wrong, you will need to reduce your calories to a level below what your body is using. The difference between what most of us think of as "dieting" vs. what I am talking about when I refer to "nutrition" is the QUALITY of the calories you ingest. The best way to lose weight is to improve the quality of your caloric intake and keep it below the number of calories you are burning in your new fitness program.
Here is an example. If you eat one serving of potato chips, you will ingest approximately 160 calories. Most of these calories will be low quality fats and processed carbohydrates. Have you ever sat down and done this? I have and it has felt like someone dropped a ball of clay in my stomach. I had no energy as a result of these calories. Now let's look at eating 1 cup of yams/sweet potatoes. This will give you 158 calories. However, the complex carbohydrates in the yams will give you energy to burn over the next few hours. There will be under one gram of fat, a big dose of potassium, no sodium and it's natural; not processed. You will not have that sluggish feeling in your stomach. This is what I mean by the QUALITY of your caloric intake.
Follow these basic rules as described by Lee Labrada in his book The Lean Body Promise:
1. Eat 5 small meals a day: Breakfast, lunch and dinner with a morning and afternoon snack. Each should contain macro nutrients.
2. Protein. Consume protein at every meal. At the 3 primary meals, a eat a piece of lean protein the size of your palm.
3. Carbohydrates. At each of the primary meals, eat a serving of complex carbohydrates the size or your fist.
4. Fruits & vegetables. Eat these at every meal to add fiber and vitamins. Fruits are the desert for those seeking a lean body.
5. Snacks. Make these protein-focused. Drink a protein shake/eat a protein bar or eat some low fat cottage cheese and a have a piece of fruit and a handful of nuts.
6. Water. As you begin to change your body, staying well hydrated is one of the best ways to lose weight. It cleanses the system of toxins and keeps your muscles full (they are 75% water). Plan on sipping water all day to the tune of 10 cups per day.
